We try to stay healthy by not eating anything that has the words “Partially Hydrogenated Oil” in the ingredients list. (Fully hydrogenated is fine; just watch out for “partially”). If you follow that one rule, you’ll eliminate a ton of junk food and trans fat from your diet. It’s amazing how many foods labeled as “healthy” has this junk in it; I’ve even found it in frozen peas that had butter sauce!!! Even items marked as “0″ trans fat can have it; it all depends on how tiny they listed their serving size.

Very early we started the rule of “Fruit First” for snack time. So, any time my dtr saw some unhealthy snack that she wanted… she knew to pick a fruit to eat first. That always filled her up and she forgot the unhealthy choice and grew to love the healthy ones. Organic peanut butter on bananas or apples is definitely a favorite.
After my son’s tball games each kid is allowed to pick a snack. The choices include candy and junk food which drives me nuts! I would love to try the Refuel chocolate milk! Our go to easy,(somewhat) healthy snack is cereal.

We like to stuff lunch boxes with strips of raw red pepper, celery or cucumber. We also make homemade granola and granola bars–both of which serve as great, healthy snacks!
The key for us is to prepare snacks ahead of time. When we are snacky, we tend to go for easy foods. So strawberries are cleaned and cut before they go into the fridge. Lettuce is washed and spun and put back into the fridge ready for a quick salad. And eggs are already hardboiled (who wants to wait 20 minutes for an egg to be ready?). Everything fixed up as soon as we get back from the grocery store!
My kids love “Ants on a Log”: celery with peanut butter and raisins on top.
We keep things simple with snacks! I clean and bag grapes, sliced apples and carrots and keep them in the fridge for easy snacking. Also keep string cheese and yogurt on hand. And dried fruits and nuts in the cupboard. (There are occasionally chips and cookies for snacks but those are really TREATS in our house).
My kids are fabulous snackers. They love my dehydrated fruit! My dehydrator runs LOTS as I dry bananas (kids’ favorite), apples, pears, prunes, peaches, pineapple… I also use the dehydrator for fruit leathers (sugar free) and jerky. YUM! The other popular snacks are fresh fruits including grapes, apple slices with PB, bananas, pears, etc., chopped cucumber bites, PB filled pretzels, whole wheat sugar free banana bread, string cheese turkey wraps, and more. So, do my kids ever get the “junk” snacks? Occasionally we have fish crackers.

I’ll have to speak about my granddaughters because my “kids” are grown and married. My granddaughters eat organic foods, and help their Mom pick vegetables and fruits at an organic farm co-op that they belong to. They don’t eat “junk” food, but love yogurt, fresh berries, bananas and anything that is homemade fresh by Mom in their kitchen at home. They love to participate in helping with baking, so they pretty much are savvy about what is in the foods they eat. They do love the Pirate’s Booty snacks which are good for them.
