How to Get to the Pololu Trailhead

Locating the trail — or any trailhead in Hawaii can be hard to find sometimes since it’s not like there are huge signs miles away pointing you to the scenic overlooks.

Simply take Highway 270 to the Northern Kohala coast until the highway is literally a dead end. You’ll pass the town of Hawi (literally just a few shops!) and will still drive about another 20 minutes before reaching the Pololu overlook. Parking is a bit tricky. There is not a real parking lot. Literally the road is a DEAD END and the trail starts. So cars park along the side of the road as you approach the dead end of Highway 270.

If you are short on time and somehow can’t hike the entire thing – at least walk down 1-2 switchbacks of the trail so you can see a bit of the magnificent view. Just going down part way is a stunning view compared to that at the overlook.

This is the view as you start to head down the trail – you can tell you will then get a peek at the various cliffs along the Valley of the Kings on the Northern tip of the Big Island.

The trail is a switchback style trail. Be prepared for it to be hot and steamy! It is a bit tricky in that it can be slippery and slick so wear study shoes. We all wore sneakers and it had rain a ton the day before but we were all fine. Just had to go cautiously on the steeper sections.

Here we are walking down the trail. We captured this cool shot with our 360 camera!

How long does it take to hike the Pololu trail? We spent about 1 hour total roundtrip – going down, spending time enjoying the bottom for about 15 minutes, and then climbing back out. The kids will enjoy the rope swing at the bottom! We took lots of photos, collected black sand and enjoyed the beauty of the Pololu Valley.

How difficult is the Pololu Hike? I’d say this was a moderate hike – it’s not far but there are switchback style trails that can be steep at times with questionable footing. Distance wise its only about 3/4 of a mile to the beach – easy! We found it really easy for our active family but it certainly gave us a good workout climbing back out! I actually found going DOWN more challenging because we had to be more cautious and careful about falling or slipping. Coming back up was certainly very steep but we did it more quickly than going down given we are all in good physical condition.

Try not to let the signs scare you – but definitely watch your children to prevent them from hanging out on the edge!

Where to eat after your Hike?

We were starving and super thirsty after this hot steamy and beautiful hike. We stopped in the little town of Hawi for lunch and Shave Ice. This is a TINY town. We are talking only a very few spots to dine but we loved the coffee shop that doubles as an ice cream and sandwich shop too! Lunch was delish, we ate outside on patio, and it was spectacular and fun to just hang out in this remote town. Fun fact: Hawi is the turnaround point for the bike ride portion of the Ironman!

Then we went upstairs next door to this cute shop for our Shave ice. It was refreshing and amazing!
