The Baby Einstein Company is encouraging viewers to share their stories of how they make DVD viewing more interactive between parent and child. I love this idea!
I just had the opportunity to review a DVD for Baby Einstein – their “Baby’s First Moves” DVD geared for children age 3 months and up. And since my son is 12 weeks old – he is just the right age for this type of activity. 2 Years ago, as a first time Mom, I was looking for additional activities and new ways to interact with my baby and I was anxious to try out Baby Einstein to see how that might work into our routines. I remember asking a friend for Dvd viewing advice – and I loved her tips and in general made them the rule as far as putting my young baby in front of the TV. Basically, my friends suggestions were that you always WATCH the show with your baby!
As I began my own “journey” as a Mom, I developed a few other ideas about Baby Einstein. For me, I find it important to use these approximately 25 min. DVD’s as a platform to remind myself of the simple things in our ordinary daily lives that will fascinate and excite a baby. Waving, Jumping, Laughing, Crawling, Playing Peek a Boo, etc. Long after the DVD is done playing, I’m reminded of all the actions I can do during the day to try to engage my impressionable baby. While watching TV with my little ones – whether it be a silent scene set to music on Baby Einstein or an episode of Diego – I also TALK TALK TALK – about what we are watching on the TV. This is a great chance to generate babble from a baby and interesting conversations from a pre-schooler. My 2 year old has taken our chats during shows into a whole new level as she regularly adopts alter egos and suggests role plays long after the show is over. (Her favorite alter ego being the orange moose Tyrone from the Backyardigans – we went through a solid month where she insisted on us calling her “Kenzie Tyrone”!)
Enjoy!
