From Hiking Waikoloa Petroglyph Field and Trail on the Big Island of Hawaii is a simple, quick, must do easy adventure if you are staying in the Waikoloa resort area on the Big Island. From lava fields, to rugged coastlines, to fields of Petroglyphs – the Big Island has so many accessible adventures for families. Take a peek at us exploring the Waikoloa Petroglyph Field and Trail on the Big Island of Hawaii. This easy hike gives visitors a taste of walking on the Lava Fields and helps you learn a real sense of the history and age of the Big Island. What I love is that you can spend even just 15 minutes or 1 hour plus depending on your schedule and interest but still get a taste of the Petroglyphs. This was one mini adventure we took while traveling in our 2018 Honda Odyssey on the Big Island and even though this was a quick and easy exploration, it remained a highlight of the trip and is a great memory that captures the essence of our time on the Big Island — what I like to cal LAVA LAVA EVERYWHERE!

Once you start the hike on the King’s Trail petroglyphs are scattered here there and everywhere. You’ll have fun hunting for them!
Directions to Waikoloa Petroglyph Field and Trail
A nice sized petroglyph field is located in the heart of the Waikoloa Resort area – literally steps away from where you turn off the highway to go to the various resorts. The trailhead is located about a quarter of a mile north of the Waikoloa Kings Shops on the the Kings walking trail — which is actually a gigantic lava field that runs for miles and miles and miles both north and south of Waikoloa.
Specifically, you’ll want to park at the little gas station that is on the right hand side shortly after you turn off Highway 19 to go to Waikoloa on Waikoloa Road.
If you are traveling from the airport or Kona vicinity, ake Highway 19 north for 25 minutes to the first stop light after the airport, and turn left towards the Waikoloa beach resorts. Turn right at the first parking lot that is literally connected to the gas station. From here you will walk towards the right of the station heading to the King’s Trail lava field. Kings trail is also sometimes known as the Kiholo Puako trail.
Look for a little sidewalk and path. It is paved and then you will see it quickly becomes a path on a rocky lava field. Wear your sneakers for sure so you don’t twist an ankle and can climb easily over the path as you explore for petroglyphs.
