If your looking to educate or introduce your older children to the civil rights movement, check out the new movie, The Watsons Go to Birmingham, sponsored by Walden Family Theater and Walmart as part of their Family Movie Night series that airs on the Hallmark Channel. I checked out this film last Friday night when it premiered on Sept 20th.
It will also air again on Friday September 27th on Hallmark Channel at 8/7c and is now available for sale on DVD at Walmart.
Since this movie is launching as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Civil Rights, the DVD includes a 135-page educational manual about the Civil Rights that has already been adopted by Birmingham Public Schools.
The film, is an adaptation of Christopher Paul Curtis’ 1996 Newbery Honor and Coretta Scott King Honor Award winning book The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963. The storyline follows an All-American family on their road trip from Flint, Michigan to Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. Their historic summer experience opens their eyes to the injustices of discrimination, which gives them a newfound courage to stand up for what is right and helps them grow stronger as a family in the process.
Tonya Lewis Lee, Spike Lee’s wife, was the producer and writer for the film and Anika Noni Rose, the Tony® Award winner and Grammy® Award nominee (The Good Wife, Dreamgirls, The Princess and the Frog) stars in the film.
The entire cast was excellent and I thought the story was extremely educational.
The movie is also very eye opening for our generation and our children who did not grow up during the civil rights movement – unlike my own parents who might remember the inequality that existed when they were growing up – especially in the deep south versus the northeast.
Also, heartbreaking to think about the horrors that went on before the civil rights movement. I do not recommend this movie for young children as I think it will scare them and confuse them since in today’s world, equality is expected and all they know. However, for kids 10-12+ or for those with an interest in learning or teaching their young children about the civil rights movement, this movie is a perfect introduction and stepping stone.
It’s well done with a great storyline while interweaving in the civil rights movement in a realistic way with characters that everyone will come to care about and love.
