I love that actor, Josh Duhamel, joined forces with Unilever Project Sunlight and Feeding America to launch a nationwide initiative to raise awareness for this issue that hits close to home by rallying friends and families to “Share A Meal” to turn the tables on child hunger in America.

1 in 5 Children in America are Fighting Hunger Daily

1 in 5 children in America don’t know where their next meal is coming  from—the same America where 70 billion pounds of food is wasted annually.  That means the 20% of children who are food insecure feel the impact of   hunger where it matters most: mental health, physical well-being and in the classroom.

Statistics on Hunger in America

If you find it hard to believe hunger is happening in your community, I assure you that with statistics like these, I’m sure it is a real problem kids are facing every day – probably even in your own child’s schools. 3 years ago, my family and I began volunteering with a very special partnership created between our school district and our local food bank to provide food on the weekends to children in Kindergarten and 1st grade in our district who are in need. We help pack food in backpacks – along with other volunteers – that the kids can bring home for healthy meals on the weekends.  Sure enough, when I look at the number of backpacks we stuff and my son’s Kindergarten class size — I realize we are talking about almost 20-30% of the kids in our school district. Shocking.

  • 16 million children struggle with hunger each year—that’s the population of Los Angeles,  New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago combined.2
  • 3.8 million households were unable to provide adequate, nutritious food for their children.
  • 37 states reported that more than 20% of children live in food insecure households.
  • 22 million  children in the U.S. rely on food stamps as their primary resource to acquire food.
  • 93% of food insecure families in the U.S. live in stable, non-temporary housing.

How Unilever is Making an Impact on Child Hunger

With the help of Feeding America’s vast network of 200 food banks nationwide, Unilever has been able to contribute nearly 30 million meals** to families and children over the past five years which includes more than 13 million pounds of food and more than $3 million in support.
