Summer heat is in full effect! With the crazy humid days upon us call for refreshing snacks. Which is why I love watermelon on a hot day. It totally quenches my thirst is a great healthy pool / beach day snack… as it is  fat-free, low in sodium and only 40 calories per cup! Here are 5 interesting facts about this summer time favorite >>

1.It’s a fruit AND a vegetable:
I had no idea! Watermelon is the product of a seed-producing plant and is sweet yet, it can be traced back to the squash, pumpkin, and cucumber family known as Cucurbitaceae. Pretty interesting!

2. Filled with water:
When I say filled, I mean filled. Watermelon is 91.5 % water. A study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that women with even mild dehydration experienced headaches, poor concentration, fatigue, and worse moods. More reason to whip up some watermelon recipes, stat. Ever try watermelon & feta?

3. Watermelon juice could help prevent soreness:
Drinking watermelon juice can actually be quite soothing after a tough workout. Those who consumed a little more than 16 ounces an hour before exercise had less muscle soreness and a lower heart rate within a day. This could be due to the watermelon containing “citrulline” that has been linked to improving artery function and low blood pressure.

4.  Summer skin & hair benefits:
Part of summer comes with sun kissed skin & chlorine hair.. wouldn’t be summer with that! 🙂 Yet can be damaging.  Vitamin A is essential for your skin.. a cup of watermelon contains nearly one-quarter of your daily recommended intake of it. Vitamin A helps keep skin and hair moisturized. Eat up!

5. You can eat the whole thing!
Did you know you can eat the watermelon grind and seeds? Talk about a no mess no fuss snack.  The rinds contain plenty of health-promoting and blood-building chlorophyll while the seeds contain iron, zinc, protein and fiber! ….. I think I am going to have to rethink my choice at the market now.
