Dateline Special ” My Child Would Never… Bully”

Bullying is a rampant nationwide issue we can’t ignore. This special 1 hour episode about bullying is not to be missed as it  explores how teens react to bullying while Parents, experts, and Kate Snow watch the scenarios with these unsuspecting teens unfold.

I had the chance to catch up with the always lovely Kate Snow on the phone earlier this week to hear all about how these scenarios were filmed and what they learned from the hidden camera situations. I adore Kate and her perspective as a parent who reports on these issues drives her passion.

Kate is a mom of two young children and says this episode will be the perfect starting point for conversations with our children about bullying. Plus, they’ll share expert advice and tips for Parents and kids on how to deal with bullying.

My kids are in preschool, but after talking to Kate, I now realize I need to instill the right values in my children  and begin to teach them about how to handle a bullying situation now, instead of waiting until they are in Junior High. I want them to begin to absorb these values now.

A few key lessons they learned from the hidden camera report:

1. Bystanders matter. Even one thing you can say to diffuse the situation or address it can change the entire dynamics and outcome.

2. Don’t be afraid to tell an adult.

3. When bullying is happening to you or your peers, identify what you don’t like, and ask the bully to stop.

I don’t want to give too much away but multiple scenarios were filmed with both girls and boys. The bullies and victims were hired actors, but all the bystander teens were totally unaware that the real point of the filming had to do with bullying. The boy bullying situations took place in a Gym /Athletic setting, while the female teen situations took place while the unsuspecting girls thought they were working on a “fashion task” and instead had to face a bully critiquing the victim about her weight and fashion sense.
