My latest test review for Straight Talk is from their new Connected Life product line – Safe Driver Car Connection. This tech tool is a BRILLIANT option if you are a parent with a teen driver as it enables you to truly keep up with your child’s driving habits, location of their vehicle, and even block texting. Check out our experience setting up and using Safe Driver Car Connection in our vehicle in our Safe Driver Car Connection Review below.
Safe Driver Car Connection Set Up
Set up was a little tricky for me because you need to register your new device, set up the service from Straight Talk, install your new device in your car, and also make an account with My Car Connection, which is what ultimately lets you track your stats.
Set up was time consuming for me – it took me a good hour to get up and running with the help of my more tech savvy husband to get up and running with our new device. Take a peek at our photo of the device installed in my husband’s Mercedes.

Almost every car has a hidden port that the auto mechanics plug into when they check your car – usually under the parking dashboard – it’s really easy to find once you know it’s there.
If you can’t find it in your car, no worries. Straight Talk Safe Driver Car Connection has a website within the registration process here you enter your vehicle make and model and they tell you where the port is located so you can just literally plug it in. This is what ultimately gives you your vehicle diagnostic info, miles per gallon, and driving information.
Our Experience Using Safe Driver Car Connection
As we don’t have a teen driver, we were most interested to see the driving stats and other results on our app based on our own drives, versus playing “worried parent” over a rebellious teen we needed to keep tabs on.
For every trip, the device shows when and where each drive starts and ends, average miles per gallon, any extra vehicle acceleration, and a final driving score where it sums up a bunch of these various stats.
From a parenting side, seeing where your child has driven the family vehicle is fantastic. You can check all this via the ZoomSafer App on your smart phone. Genius!
I am very interested in blocking texts – especially someday when my kids are drivers! However, at this point, Safe Driver Car Connection only has this feature for Android or Blackberry and our family owns iPhones.
