Kids and Smartphones

My kids are constantly seeing other kids with their own iPod Touches, iPhones, iPad Mini’s and  iPads. None of my kids have their own as we feel it’s just a bit extravagant and unnecessary in the 1st and 3rd grade and middle school seems more appropriate in our  minds for all this smartphone tech…..

Kenzie, age 9, in 3rd grade is DYING for an Apple device to start texting friends cause you know – kids today don’t call each other – they text! And clearly, she’s like literally not texting anyone since she’s phoneless. Last year, Kenzie started her adorable OneKidsLife.com and has been working so hard on it – making videos, taking photos, posting on Twitter and Instagram and so on as she’s constantly taking photos with our phones for her mini social media career.

SO…..

We decided this would be the perfect occasion to hook up our older daughter with a no-contract plan on one of our older iPhones we had at home after we upgraded last year.For just one 1 month it would only cost us $45 and she’ll be able to snap away and share pics on Instagram and see what it’s like to start texting a few friends (which we’ll carefully monitor of course too!) Luckily, she’s uber responsible and my thought is if we start things by holding her hand along the way, it will be easier for her to keep making smart decisions as she gets older!
