Summer Reading Party #SummerReading

This week we hosted a Summer Reading party to inspire kids to join the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge to log their reading minutes to help break the world record.  My bookworm Kenzie is constantly reading and I’m always encouraging my 6 year old Kyle to read more …..so joining in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a great way for me to motivate Kyle and highlight Kenzie’s extraordinary reading efforts.

The kids all brought their favorite books and read on the lawn – love this photo!

You can sign up for the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge with your kids here: http://scholastic.com/summer The website is VERY easy to use and your kids will love logging in on their own and inputting their minutes read each day of the week.

Scholastic sent us cool activities to do with the kids too – everyone loved me quizzing them about the Solar System!

The kids all listed out their favorite books and what they are hoping to read next. You can imagine Kenzie had a VERY long list! Just talking about reading seems to inspire my son to put in those extra minutes and effort too. Since our party on Monday, I’ve had him gaining confidence to read aloud Dr. Seuss fluently. Woohoo!!!! And, he’s now begging me to read extra chapters of his new “Stink” book. A visit to the library is in order so we can check out more new books for the kids ASAP to keep this momentum going for my little guy!

Another cool way that you might want to inspire your kids to read is to tie in a craft activity to whatever book they are reading now or to have them draw a scene from a favorite novel. Kyle made a clay model of a character and Kenzie drew a castle – to signify her love of Hogwarts in Harry Potter. So cute!

This year’s Summer Reading theme is Reading Under the Stars, and is powered by EVEREADY®, the maker of batteries and flashlights, to encourage families to discover new and fun ways to explore reading outside this summer. EVEREADY sent us a box of flashlights – the kids thought this was really cool. Especially if you want to sneak in some reading after Mom turns the lights off at night 🙂

A few favorites Scholastic sent us this summer. Kenzie has read all the chapter books and Kyle loves this latest in the beloved FLY GUY series.
