What Is Diwali?
Diwali, also called Deepavali, is the Festival of Lights. It began in India and is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the world. The festival lasts five days and the date changes each year depending upon the Moon. It typically lands in October or November. In 2026, the main day of Diwali is Sunday, November 8.
The name means “row of lights.” Families light small clay oil lamps called diyas, wear new clothes, share sweets and gifts, and enjoy fireworks. Diwali celebrates light winning over darkness and good winning over evil. You can find more kid-friendly facts in National Geographic Kids’ 10 fabulous facts about Diwali.
What Is Rangoli?
Rangoli is a colorful design made on the floor. Sometimes this are drawn right at the front door to welcome guests and bring good luck during Diwali. Families create them with colored powders, rice, sand and flower petals. Most rangoli designs are round and symmetrical, with petals, dots and diya lamps.
Rangoli is meant to be created and then swept away. This adds to it’s beauty! Watch a rangoli artist at work in PBS’s Rangoli Sand Artist video. It’s a great one to show kids before they start coloring!
I love the symmetry and the concept that these beautiful creations are made in a temporary way to celebreate the season but then will be cleaned up.
